Sacramento READS! celebrated the beginning of its second year with a fun-filled free event at Fairytale town Thursday. The literary program hosted the event to inspire kids to read. Attendees participated in lots of reading-relevant activities and had the opportunity to win educational prizes. The gala brought together lots of partnerships, support and attendees, too.
Mayor Kevin Johnson, who launched Sacramento READS! in August 2011, was present, and so was News10.
Our meteorologist Monica Woods broadcasted the weather live, and we also had a booth.
The News10 'mock studio' allowed kids to get in front of the camera and share their experiences in reading. And, these PSAs could possibly make air. Kids were also offered Reading Connect pencils and customized bookmarks with tassels.
Sacramento READS! is a ten-year initiative with a vision of making Sacramento the first city in the country to have every third grader reading on grade level by the end of third grade. The campaign focuses on three main goals, school readiness, school attendance, and summer learning loss.
Reading Connects is a News10 campaign to promote literacy in our community. Those interested in learning more about this, should check out the Reading Connects page on news10.net.
