Gown Sale and Workshops Highlights of Bridal Expo this Sunday

A gown sale with proceeds going to My Sister's House, practical workshops and fun activities will be the focus at Bridal Expo, this Sunday May 31 at the Mack Powell Event Center (Sacramento Association of Realtors building).

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., brides can try on and buy their wedding gowns right there.  Second Summer Bride will be selling gowns brought from their shop along with gowns from a local organization. Some featured designers are Demetrios, Alfred Angelo, and Jasmine Couture and some are on sale for 50-70% off retail.  Proceeds will go to My Sister's House, a shelter for victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault and human trafficking that also offers education, job training and other services.

Not Your Grandma’s Resolutions

Not Your Grandma’s Resolutions

You know what day it is, right? This is the day that the whole world comes together and says, “I wish I’d worked more”. No, wait. That’s what people say on their death bed. Or rather, what people never say on their death bed. Also? The green squigglies are telling me that “deathbed” is one word. Also? Happy New Year.

If it’s not too late to declare my New Year’s resolutions, I’d like to name them here. In addition to the Word document boiler template called “New Year’s Resolutions” that provides the 3 default items, I am adding one more item:

• lose weight
• eat better
• exercise
make a podcast about aliens... Read More

Aftershock: A Love Story for 19,000 Rock and Metal Fans

Aftershock: A Love Story for 19,000 Rock and Metal Fans

Discovery Park, Sacramento - The heat was stifling and the dust was enough to make any contact-wearer’s eyes flood. Dirt caked the ripped jean vests and sweaty faces of the crowd; regardless of the drought driven conditions, over 19,000 people flocked to Sacramento’s Discovery Park this weekend to thrash, mosh, and headbang to genre and decade-spanning rock.

I made my way to my first show of Saturday: Pepper. It was a classic Sacramento Summer day. The heat accompanying the blend of rock and reggae, with that wonderful ground-shaking bass in full effect and felt full-force from even the very back of the crowd.

Strive for Strength offers great opportunity to teenage girls!

Strive for Strength offers great opportunity to teenage girls!

Strive for Strength is hosting a powerful daylong retreat April 14, which addresses some of the issues teenage girls are facing every day, such as family and friend relationships, bullying, social pressures and self-image.

As part of the day's event, attendees will have the opportunity to listen to leaders, who will bring their own examples of empowerment and what it means to be a young woman today. Scheduled speakers/mentors are:

*Lauren Cook - a recent graduate from UCLA with a double major in communication studies and psychology, and the author of "The Sunny Side Up!", which focuses on gratitude and goal setting.

* Noelle Bean - a singer and songwriter from Los Angeles, who says she writes about real life and wants to inspire young people through her music.
