Excitement builds for Elk Grove running event all to benefit youth sports scholarships

As a mom of two boys, Tamra Rickman felt she needed to do more than just remind her sons to do their chores and finish their homework. She wanted something for them to do as family. She encouraged her sons to take up sports and thought there would be plenty of benefits to them being on a team.

“It gave them a sense of responsibility. It gave us something to talk about. Sports also teach time management, teamwork and being prepared,” said Rickman, whose sons have played soccer and baseball.

The challenge was figuring out how to pay for all the expenses associated with playing a team sport. From the registration fees, to the uniforms and gear, and in some cases, the cost of travelling to games and events, the price to play can be in the hundreds or thousands of dollars.

But that’s where the Elk Grove Youth Sports Foundation(EGYSF) comes in.
