Selland's opening a second location in January

Selland's opening a second location in January

If you've been to Selland's in East Sacramento, then you know this is the place to go if you are looking for unique wines, great food and a great atmosphere.  I love them for their wine tasting events and weekly "dinner for 2" specials for $25 (including a bottle of wine).

Naturally, when I heard they were opening a second location in El Dorado Hills, I was thrilled.

They don't have an exact date yet, but say they will open hopefully by mid-January. The new Selland’s will have the same Café Menu as the East Sacramento location as well as their dinner and brunch specials, a full service Bakery and an even bigger wine shop.

Turkey Hunting in Madrid

Turkey Hunting in Madrid

Have you ever found yourself in the market for a Thanksgiving turkey in Spain? Well, I have and learned they are even more rare than a café open in the late afternoon.

While studying abroad in England I got to meet up with a friend in Madrid while her ship docked for a few days in Cadiz. We had grand ideas of washing away any homesickness with an American Thanksgiving celebration with friends. As I soon discovered, turkey is geographically native to the Americas and not a common dish in Europe, even on (gasp) what I consider the most sacred holiday of the year! My grandmother told me later she had the same experience while living in Switzerland in the 60's - and Thanksgiving Goose it was!

We quickly got over this travel speed bump and set out to discover the city and find our own feast. As weary travelers we wholly embraced the standstill that overtakes the city at siesta time.

Trying to bake!

Trying to bake!

Well, I finally gave it a shot and took a stab at baking a loaf of bread. I've gotta say that it's pretty involved. Overall I think it came out pretty darn good.

This mixer has been sitting on my countertop for quite a while just calling my name. I have the dough-hook attachment and it makes the process a lot less physically draining. You pretty much dump in the ingredients and it does most of the hard work for you.

I tried a fire roasted onion loaf recipe that I got from a Paul Prudhomme book that I own. Wow! I think I gained a few pounds.

It came out a little flat, I think. I put it in my oven thinking that the pilot light would keep it warm enough during the rising. I'm wondering if it was too cool in there. Maybe I don't have a pilot light in there? Dunno.
