The McVillage website states that, quote, “this smart growth, infill community of 328 homes is designed to fit into Sacramento’s urban fabric and complement adjoining neighborhoods.”

Unfortunately, smart growth is a phrase that has lost much of its meaning over the last several years. Nearly every project, of every scale, in any location, gets described by its developer as smart growth so that there can be the illusion of forward-thinking, green development. Historic homes and gardens, a sprawling ranch and quaint market are all part of the tour. Our member facilities need this opportunity to be featured since the SacAfWPi mixers are usually held closer to Sacramento.

Sacramento Man Creates Unique Business of Saving Memories

Sacramento Man Creates Unique Business of Saving Memories

After a varied and colorful career spanning everything from environmental activism to running a passport photo business, Marty Nelson opened Video Lab Multimedia, now located at 2630 Arden Way. Since 1985, as he tells it, he’s been in the business of saving memories.

In fact, Nelson is confident that Video Lab provides the most comprehensive source for saving memories in Sacramento and possibly Northern California.

In short, customers bring in everything from VHS tapes, audiotapes, vinyl records, old photos and negatives, professional format video, 8 and 16mm film and just about everything else out there and Nelson transfers, duplicates or even edits them into a more contemporary, durable, longer lasting digital format, including DVDs and hard drives. Memories saved!

And what sorts of memories is Nelson saving? Everything from irreplaceable home movies to slides of precious family vacations to old ¼ inch audiotape reels.

Railroad Museum Calls Out for Summer Volunteers!

Railroad Museum Calls Out for Summer Volunteers!

Fascinated by railroading history? Interested in working on a train? Enjoy working with visitors, children and school groups? California State Parks, the California State Railroad Museum and Old Sacramento State Historic Park (SHP) are now recruiting adults (18 or older) who are interested in volunteering in summer 2013 to help communicate the West’s fascinating heritage of railroading and the California Gold Rush.  The volunteer orientation will begin on Monday, June 17, but interested volunteers must apply and be interviewed in advance. Volunteer applications are being accepted now through Friday, June 7.  Community members are encouraged to get involved in this worthwhile program that offers an opportunity to support the local community while learning more about California’s rich history, meeting new people and developing friendships with those who share similar interests.
