Mother's Day treat: Homemade scones

I have never been a big fan of scones.  They have always been a bit dry for my taste.  That all changed thanks to Barbara Bowers of Rose Mountain Manor in Colfax, CA.  Barbara and her wonderful recipe were featued on News10 Midday and News10.net back in October of 2002.  From that point on, this recipe has been a staple for special events and just because.

Ingredients

  • 3 1/3 cups Bisquick
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 6 tabelspoons softened butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup fruit*

Directions

Blend Bisquick and sugar. Cut in butter to form a crumbly mixture.  Beat eggs and milk together and add to dry mix.  Stir with a fork until just mixed (do not overmix).  Drop into four piles onto a baking sheet.  Cut into four pieces each with about one-eight inch between.  Sprinkle with sugar.  Bake at 400 degrees for

Congresswoman Matsui Introduces Safe and Complete Streets Legislation

Congresswoman Matsui Introduces Safe and Complete Streets Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) introduced the Safe and Complete Streets Act of 2011, legislation that would require each state’s department of transportation and metropolitan planning organization to put in place a Complete Streets policy that ensures all Federally-funded transportation projects accommodate the safety and convenience of all users. Complete Streets policies ensures roadways are built with all users in mind – including bicyclists, public transportation vehicles and riders, motorists, freight vehicles, and pedestrians of all ages and abilities. This bipartisan legislation is cosponsored by Congressman Steven LaTourette (R-OH).

“Complete Streets policies are a win-win for local communities: they save lives and create forward-looking projects that provide lasting value,” Matsui said.

Honey Bee Swarms Begin in Sacramento Region

Beginning in spring each year we receive calls from concerned customers and the public regarding honey bee swarms.  Most of these callers fear the swarms and want us to erradicate them.  If you come accross a swarm, such as the one shown here, don’t be alarmed.  It’s only moving day for a colony of Honey Bees.  When a hive becomes too large the queen lays eggs in special brood cells and workers begin feeding the new larvae a special, pollen rich food,  called Royal Jelly.  This causes them to grow into new queens.  One of these queens will become the new mother of the colony.  The old queen will leave the colony, with thousands to tens of thousands of workers, and move to a new location to start a new hive.  Prior to departure scout bees will look at a number of potential new hive sites.

Laura Scarborough’s blog, Adventures in Juggling, is about a Manteca mom’s life with a husband, five kids, one of which has special needs, three pets and being a RN at the neo-natal intensive care unit, NICU.

“We started in 2005, back then it was a kind of a curiosity.”
