Sacramento County installs automated parking kiosks at parks

Sacramento County installs automated parking kiosks at parks

SACRAMENTO - Parking will be easier to pay for at two Sacramento County parks parking lots with benefits for both the city and county by sharing revenue when two new automated parking kiosks begin operations June 1.

The city’s parking division has installed two pay-by-space kiosks at the Howe Avenue Access and Watt Avenue Access parking lots. The machines take cash, credit cards, and park goers can even pay via cell phone. The new technology will replace the old self-service drop boxes.

It's Kitten Season at Sacramento SPCA!

It's Kitten Season at Sacramento SPCA!

Yes! It is offically "kitten season" once again!  And what better way to enjoy this warmer weather, than to share it with a new furry friend?

Pictured above are three buddies named Kiko (149163), Kenji (149164) and Kato (149165). These three are all two-months-old and were in the same foster home. Their foster family reports that Kiko, the female kitten on the left with torbie coloring, is a busy and curious lap cat. Kenji, the cute black male kitten in the center, is a gentle and sweet cuddler. Kato, the male brown tiger on the right, is kooky, funny and curious.

Kittens often get adopted quickly but this time of year there's always more available.

More burglaries by bogus workmen reported

SACRAMENTO, CA - Sacramento residents, especially elderly ones, are still falling prey to burglars posing as workmen to gain access to their homes, police said.

Sacramento police Officer Laura Peck said there have been five more such ruses in the past week where the thieves pose as utility or construction workers.

In each situation, one man engaged the resident outdoors or in a basement while the second man ransacked the house taking valuables and financial records. The two may be using cellphone to communicate.

Two of the crimes were committed Tuesday. One was on the 2200 block of 13th Street at 11:09 a.m., the other on the 2000 block of 12th Street at 11:46 a.m.

Monday, the burglars targeted victims on the 4300 block of Fallow Drive at 11:50 a.m. and the 2200 block of 17th Street at 12:36 p.m.

Scam artists posing as student fundraisers

Scam artists posing as student fundraisers

Beware of two young women posing as students from the Department of Theatre & Dance who are selling magazines “to win a trip to London.”  Their scam claims that the department will use the proceeds to put on a production of “The Taming of the Shrew.” They also claim to be raising money for Shriners hospital.

Shriners does not solicit funds in this manner. Nor is Sac State’s Theatre & Dance Department sponsoring any trips to London or other places this summer.

Last year, several faculty and staff members reported suspicious behavior by people claiming to be connected to the University program. Sac State does not send our students out to solicit funds in any manner, other than pre-approved on campus activities directly connected to productions during the school year.

RT to hold emergency drill May 25

RT to hold emergency drill May 25

SACRAMENTO - The Sacramento Regional Transit District (RT) will conduct a field exercise on Wednesday, May 25 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. to evaluate the emergency response capabilities of RT and regional emergency providers. The scenario will feature a mock threat of a flood caused by an act of terrorism that may include the relocation of vehicles and equipment.

Officials from the Sacramento Police Department and Sacramento County Sheriff's Department will also participate. Regular RT business and service will not be affected during the exercise.

The drill will take place at RT's administrative office at 1400 29th Street. The event was designed to both demonstrate and evaluate the capability to respond to an act of terrorism and natural disaster. The exercise is funded through a Transit Security Grant of about $29,000 awarded to RT Police Services by the Department of Homeland Security.
