Sutter's Fort Presents "Hands on History: Mining the Miners" on July 16!

Is Lady Luck on your side?

With a continued effort to provide more interactive, hands-on opportunities than ever before, Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park presents “Hands on History: Mining the Miners”     on Saturday, July 16, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Fort visitors will experience how California’s early pioneers often participated in high-stakes games of chance while trying to strike it rich -- as if daily life on the frontier wasn’t enough of a gamble!

“Mining the Miners” offers a fun day of games as well as the opportunity to experience the “buyer beware” culture of the Gold Rush era. Poker and roulette are familiar to us today, but have you played Faro, three-card monte, or chuck-a-luck?

Sacramento D.A.: Staff cuts mean fewer prosecutions

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, CA - Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully announced Wednesday how her reduced budget will impact the prosecution of crimes and staff.

Scully said due to receiving $6.9 million less for 2011-2012, her office will only have the resources to prosecute violent crimes and threats of physical injury. She said there won't be resources to investigate and try major fraud, white collar fraud and political corruption; misdemeanor drug offenses and thefts under $950.

In addition, the district attorney's office will cease investigating officer-involved shootings and deaths in custody.

Scully is eliminating the major narcotics, vehicle theft and misdemeanor trial units. Staffing will be cut in the homicide, gangs and hate crimes, domestic violence and career criminal units. The D.A. says as of Aug. 1, there will be 64 fewer staff, including 31 prosecutors.

Pet of the Week- Speckles!

Meet Speckles!

Such a sweet heart! Speckles is a three-year-old cuddle bug, looking for a good lap to snuggle up in. She is very friendly and didn't even mind being on TV for a pet-of-the-week segment! Speckles is OK to live with other cats, small dogs and even children.

Celebrate summer with the Sacramento SPCA as we team up with the makers of Fresh Step litter and the ASPCA for a very special cat adoption event!

Now through the end of August, all adult cats over one-year-old  (like Speckles!) are FREE; Kittens are half-off!
